Twice a year Naomi and I drive down to Los Angeles for the gift show. The first few years it was very exciting because it was all new and there was so much energy and things to choose from. The excitement was never knowing what fun new things we would find for the store. We had to race to our favorite vendors to beat other shop owners. That has really changed. There are half as many vendors and very few new items. It is harder to find unique new merchandise for the store. While shopping in Santa Monica and Venice Beach, we found that many of our favorite stores are no longer in business. It made us grateful that we are able to stay in business and that we’ve found the energy to work hard to dig up cool new home accessories that our customers will like.
Our favorite things we found in LA are stacks of vintage Indian quilts that add soul to your house. We love to put them on the back of a sofa or to cover a bench or make pillows out of them. The lady we bought them from says she feels bad buying these pieces of history and family heirlooms and taking them out of their country.
We also found bags made out of these same vintage Indian quilts that are the perfect Bohemian touch to your outfit. I am sure you will see one of us using them in Paris.
Another highlight was visiting Kathryn Irelands design studio near Hollywood. We have several of her books in our store and we’ve always admired her design sensibilities. It was a treat to see her fabrics up close and meet Rebecca, Kathryn’s friendly assistant.
We love the Blabla dolls!
This was a very cool store on Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach.
Monica tried her first macaron. We will soon be trying them in Paris!
Naomi had this beautiful and yummy dish while at the LA Gift Show.
I will always love LA for being a center of many things new, but it also makes me love Northern California and our more down to earth lifestyle! And again, THANK YOU to all of our customers who keep us motivated and in business! ~ love Monica
