Naomi & I are often touched by the generosity of our customers towards their friends and family. You all buy the most thoughtful gifts for each other, so we know you will all understand why we want to share a ministry with you that is about the same spirit of generosity. In Watsonville, on a side street in a nondescript house there are a few people working very hard and with a sweet, calm determination to feed hungry people. The name of this little place is Loaves and Fishes.
This well run nonprofit organization has been feeding hungry families and individuals since the 1989 earthquake. You can learn all about their mission and story on their website, www.pvloavesandfishes.org.
Recently Naomi and I visited so we could see how our donations were being used. We love giving to something local, where we can really see every dollar being spent for very real immediate needs. We began by meeting Kristal, the new Executive Director. While she seems very young for such a big task she is full of enthusiasm and great ideas for how to improve upon an already valuable ministry. After touring the old Victorian house turned kitchen, dining room, & pantry we could see how Kristal could easily be overwhelmed. She is supported by many dedicated volunteers that give countless hours to preparing and serving food. There is not room to cover all the needs these hardworking people have. After the volunteers and I ate a communal lunch, Naomi and I were then presented with aprons and caps so that we could serve food. Out of nowhere a hundred men, women and children came to eat a lunch of salad, chicken, beans and salsa.
The volunteers have great spirits and we were impressed at how fun they make the job. Maria in particular helped maintain an atmosphere of hope where you could see many problems. There were people from every circumstance. We know that homelessness and poverty is a problem with no easy answers, but no one can help themselves if they are hungry!
After spending two hours touring and then serving Naomi and I were drawn into the great needs and daunting task of Loaves and Fishes. We feel the greatest amount of good we can do for them is to spread the word about what they do! They really need your help. If you’ve ever wanted to give to a homeless person but thought to yourself, “I would rather give the money to someone who will make sure they get fed,” Loaves and Fishes is the perfect place to put your money.
If you visit their website, you can learn how you can help and participate too. Naomi and I have been looking for a long time for an organization Warmth Company can help and we feel that Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes is it. We love good food, families and homes. We know you all do, too, which makes Loaves and Fishes a perfect match for a worthwhile cause.
